In a Vase on Monday – Love and rosemary for remembrance

In a Vase on Monday - rosemary, curry plant, lemon mint and pelogoniums

In a Vase on Monday – rosemary, curry plant, lemon mint and pelargoniums – 30 December 2015

I want to tell you the pleasure, the sheer unbridled joy, of cooking without a recipe… In Truth good eating depends on nothing more than fine ingredients simply cooked. Nigel Slater Appetite (2000)

I’ve loved four men in my life; they all adore cooking, and believe that providing wonderful food is a way of expressing their love for the people they care about. They are my Dad J, my brother M who lives in Australia, my friend (and former partner of 20 years) Steve who died so suddenly in April and, of course, my wonderful Chap.
None of them followed recipes to the letter; unless it’s baking – that’s chemistry.

So I decided to celebrate their love of cooking in my vase today.

Wordless Wednesday – smoked salmon fishcakes

Loch Fyne smoked salmon fishcakes handmade by my Chap - #100happydays

Loch Fyne smoked salmon fishcakes handmade by my Chap – #100happydays – 30 December 2015

My Chap made  these fishcakes.   We are both remembering my Dad J on what would have been his 86th birthday – he is very missed everyday. My Dad could make an excellent fishcake too and loved smoked salmon.

Christmas Sunday – turkey and ham pie

If you really want to make a friend, go to someone’s house and eat with him… the people who give you their food give you their heart – Cesar Chavez – co-founder of the National Farm Workers Association.

My Chap is a really good cook; he used to be a chef when he was young.  He decided to make turkey and ham pie for dinner tonight.  I’ve been absolutely full of a cold so it was just what I needed. It was absolutely lovely and definitely today’s #100happydays photo. Continue reading

Christmas – hug the people you love

Christmas tea, it's a wonderful time of year.

Hug the people you love, and tell them too, especially if they live a long way away. They might not be around tomorrow.  Look for the positives every day. I’ve tried to do this every day this year, even in the dark times. My Chap, my family, my friends and my garden help.  #100happydays

On Christmas Day please take the time to do something you like doing, eat and drink something you like and make some good memories.  I shall be doing the same – walking in the woods, pottering in the garden (no rain!)  eating smoked salmon and drinking bubbly with my Chap – and reminding him I love him mind, body and spirit to the end of my days.

Life isn’t a dress rehearsal.

i hope you all have the best Christmas you can.

Carpe Diem.

Love bec xx

In a vase on Monday – A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away….

It’s an exciting week for a couple of reasons, I noticed that some of my hardy fuchsias, in pots in the garage, are still flowering.  An obvious choice for my ‘In a Vase on Monday’. They made my day so are my #100happydays photo as well.  I’m not sure which ones they are as they’re gifts from my Mum – one is relative of Tom Thumb.   They really shouldn’t be flowering in December but it’s been very mild.   The fuchsias that are planted out in the garden have all gone over now as it’s been very wet and windy.

Star Wars – Force Awakens’ opens in the UK on Thursday. If you’re a regular reader you might have noticed Yoda appears on my blog now and again.  Continue reading

Happiness depends upon ourselves

Aristotle 384 – 322 BC

It’s been very interesting  thinking everyday about what has made me happy –  it’s often centred around friends and the people I love, travel, food, places and history – our life in and around Manchester – the first industrial city.  Today, it’s a diverse, fascinating and tolerant city.  I’m proud to be an adopted Northerner.

I could, of course, take a picture of something in my garden every day for this challenge – as my garden does truly lift my soul.   Or a picture of my Chap – he has been my rock since the day we met – and particularly this year.

#100happydays is helping me get back to where I want to be.  Continue reading
